Die 1950er Jahre waren in vollem Gange und British Railways läutete den Beginn eines radikalen Modernisierungsplans ein, bei dem Dampflokomotiven zugunsten brandneuer dieselbetriebener Züge ausgemustert werden sollten.

Brush Traction entwickelte den Type 2, der in die PS-Sparte von 1000–1499 (757,7–1117,8 kW) fiel und somit für nachrangige Personen- und Güterzüge geeignet war. Die ersten Type-2-Loks wurden in der Eastern Region in Betrieb genommen, fanden aber bald landesweit Verwendung, da die Flotte immer größer wurde. Nach der Einführung von TOPS wurden sie als BR Class 31 bezeichnet.

Von der Class 31 wurden mehrere Unterklassen produziert, insbesondere als sich die Technologie im Laufe der Zeit weiterentwickelte. Die Standard-Lokomotive war jedoch die 31/1, die über Dampfheizkessel, eine Zugnummernanzeige an jedem Führerstand und eine vielseitige Kompatibilität mit zahlreichen anderen Diesellokomotiven verfügte. Die 31/1-Loks wurden im nachrangigen Personenzugdienst und für leichtere Gütertransporte verwendet. Für Güterzüge wurden sie oft paarweise eingesetzt, da ihre geringe Leistung zu Schleudern führen konnte.

Die Flotte bestand aus 263 Lokomotiven und war in 12 Depots in ganz England stationiert, darunter auch im Thornaby Depot, wo die 31er den Zügen der Tees Valley Line zugewiesen wurden.

Nach ihrer jahrzehntelangen Karriere und einer erfolgreichen Instandhaltung ist es jetzt an der Zeit, die Uhren zurückzudrehen und die berühmte BR Class 31 in Train Sim World 2 in ihrer Blütezeit zu erleben!
