Die in den 1950er Jahren entwickelte English Electric Type 1 war der erste große Schritt auf dem Weg der British Railways zur Nutzung von Dieselfahrzeugen. Nach vielen Versuchen und Fehlschlägen erwies sich die Type 1 als vielversprechende Lokomotive mit 1000 PS (746 kW), von der zwischen 1957 und 1968 insgesamt 228 Stück produziert wurden.

Die Type-1-Lokomotiven lösten die Dampflokomotiven mit gleichwertiger Leistung ab, vor allem im leichten und gemischten Gütertransport im Binnenland und in Schottland. Im Gegensatz zu neueren Lokomotiven weisen die Type-1-Lokomotiven ein einzigartiges Führerstandsdesign auf.

Der Führerstand, der sich am hinteren Ende der Lokomotive befindet, hat in beide Richtungen weisende Bedienelemente und verleiht den Lokomotiven ein Tenderlok-ähnliches Aussehen, wobei sich der Dieselmotor und die Bordausrüstung ähnlich wie eine Feuerkammer und ein Kessel vor dem Führerstand befinden. Ein weiteres Dampflokomotiven-Merkmal waren die Zugnummer-Scheiben, die jedes Ende der Lok zierten. Die ersten 127 Exemplare der Type 1 wurden auf diese Art und Weise gebaut.

Die eingeschränkte Sicht, wenn man mit der Nase voraus fuhr, wurde schnell als Problem erkannt, sodass es üblich wurde, zwei Type-1-Einheiten an der Nase aneinanderzukoppeln. Dies ermöglichte eine bessere Sicht auf die voraus liegende Strecke und hatte den zusätzlichen Vorteil, die Pferdestärken zu verdoppeln, sodass auch schwerere Züge eingesetzt werden konnten.

Mit der Einführung des TOPS-Klassifizierungssystems wurden die EE-Type 1 in BR Class 20 umbenannt, obwohl sie vielen als „Choppers“ bekannt sind, da ihre Motoren unter Last wie Hubschrauber klingen.

Obwohl sie zu den ältesten Diesellokomotiven gehören, sind die Class-20-Loks bis heute im Einsatz. 20 Exemplare sind bis heute erhalten geblieben und auf den „Heritage Railways“ des Landes häufig anzutreffen.
