The scenic island railway that traverses the hills of Rügen between Stralsund and Sassnitz has arrived for Train Simulator.

The 1860s, iron rails were rapidly spreading throughout Germany, including those of the Angermünde–Stralsund railway which was built to shorten journey times between the north of the country and Sweden. There was however an opportunity to get rails even closer to the Baltic border, the island of Rügen.

It would not be until 1883 when a railway on Rügen soil was built. It originally stretched as far as Bergen auf Rügen to begin with, and was extended 8 years later to reach the northern coast of the island at Sassnitz. At this point however, there was no fixed crossing with the mainland, instead, the body of water known as the Strelasund was traversed by ferry.

Traffic steadily grew in popularity as Germany and Sweden were ever closer linked. Mail would cross borders via Rügen faster than ever before, and eventually, a railway ferry was established between the two countries to bring them even closer together. The success of the ferry urged a greater connection to the mainland, and so in the 1930s a bridge was built over the Strelasund.

It wasn’t just Sassnitz and Sweden that benefitted from the island railway, the coastal town of Binz also found itself served by a single track branch line from Lietzow, and today serves as an equally important destination with every other train terminating there.

Following electrification, and the fall of the iron curtain, Rügen has become something of a holiday resort and has been referred to as “Brighton for Berliners” by those who have reviewed its Baltic coastline; and what better way to go on a summer holiday than by scenic rail!

Die malerische Inselbahn, die die Hügel von Rügen zwischen Stralsund und Sassnitz überquert, ist jetzt für Train Simulator verfügbar.

In den 1860er Jahren verbreiteten sich Eisenbahnen schnell in Deutschland, darunter die Eisenbahnlinie Angermünde-Stralsund, die gebaut wurde, um die Reisezeit zwischen dem Norden des Landes und Schweden zu verkürzen. Es bot sich jedoch die Möglichkeit an, die Schienen noch näher an die Ostseegrenze zu bauen, auf der Insel Rügen.

Erst 1883 wurde eine Eisenbahnstrecke auf Rügen gebaut. Ursprünglich erstreckte sie sich bis Bergen auf Rügen und wurde acht Jahre später zur Nordküste der Insel bis nach Sassnitz verlängert. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt gab es allerdings keine feste Verbindung mit dem Festland. Stattdessen wurde das Gewässer namens Strelasund mit der Fähre überquert.

Der Verkehr wuchs stetig, da Deutschland und Schweden immer enger miteinander verbunden waren. Post überquerte die Grenze über Rügen schneller als je zuvor, und schließlich wurde eine Eisenbahnfähre zwischen den beiden Ländern eingeführt, die die beiden Länder noch näher zusammenbrachte. Der Erfolg der Fähre verlangte nach einer besseren Anbindung an das Festland, und so wurde in den 1930er Jahren eine Brücke über den Strelasund gebaut.

Doch nicht nur Sassnitz und Schweden profitierten von der Inselbahn. Auch der Küstenort Binz wurde über eine Einschienenbahn mit Lietzow verbunden und dient heute als ein genauso bedeutendes Ziel, da jeder zweite Zug hier endet.

Infolge der Elektrifizierung und des Falls des Eisernen Vorhangs wurde Rügen zu einem Ferienort und aufgrund der schönen Ostseeküste zu etwas wie dem „Brighton der Berliner“. Und wie kann man schöner in die Sommerferien reisen als über eine malerische Eisenbahnstrecke!

Ce n'est qu'en 1883 qu'un chemin de fer fut construit sur le sol de Rügen. Sassnitz et la Suède ne sont pas les seuls à avoir profité du chemin de fer insulaire. La ville côtière de Binz s'est également retrouvée desservie par un embranchement à voie unique à partir de Lietzow, et avec tous les autres trains qui s'y rendent, elle est aujourd'hui une destination tout aussi importante.

Après l'électrification du réseau et la chute du rideau de fer, Rügen est devenue une sorte de lieu de villégiature et a été surnommée le « Brighton des Berlinois » par ceux qui ont passé en revue ses côtes baltes ; et quel meilleur moyen de partir en vacances d'été qu'à bord d'un train touristique !
