A rich history of modernisation and refinement awaits you on the Woodhead Electric Railway – see for yourself how advances in power and route design gave new life to a struggling operation. From the first days of this route steep and unforgiving gradients combined with heavy coal trains to make it a challenge for steam trains, so even as far back as the GCR days, discussions of electrification were taking place…

Words were turned into actions by the LNER in 1936, who planned out the electrification of the line between Sheffield and Manchester, including the branch line to Wath, and even had a majority of the overhead gantries in place before the start of the Second World War. While the conflict halted the project, it was reinstated as soon as the war ended, however one big change to the line was added into the plan.

To traverse the Pennines, the Woodhead Line when built bored through the landscape with tunnels stretching to 3 miles long. Initially, a single-track tunnel “Woodhead 1” was opened in 1845 and was one of the longest in the world, this was soon followed by “Woodhead 2”, another single-track pathway though the Pennines. Enclosed, and damaged due to years of use by steam locomotives, it was decided that the electrified line would pass through “Woodhead 3”, a new twin-track tunnel that could incorporate the wires.

A small fleet of 8 BR Class 506 EMUs were constructed for passenger use - these 3-car units would operate between Hadfield, Glossop and Manchester throughout their working lives. The 506s were rather unique, along with the 76s and the Woodhead Line itself, in being electrified to 1500V DC, instead of the conventional 25 kV AC, this different electrification made it easier for heavy trains to use regenerative braking on the unrelenting downhill sections.

Despite the modernisation and new fleet, the Woodhead Line was closed to passenger traffic in 1970, this controversy was due to the Hope Valley Line being all around more convenient, albeit less direct. The Woodhead Electric Railway in Blue captures the route as it was in its waning years, and in addition to that, covers extra mileage such as the Glossop Branch and Reddish depot. If that wasn’t enough, the included traction; Class 08, Class 76 and Class 506, will all come equipped with Pro Range functionality for those who like an extra challenge. Den Worten folgten im Jahr 1936 schließlich Taten durch die LNER, die die Elektrifizierung der Strecke zwischen Sheffield und Manchester, inklusive des Abzweigs nach Wath, planten und durchführten. Sie hatten ebenfalls den Großteil der Gerüste für die Oberleitungen bereitgestellt, bevor der 2. Weltkrieg begann und das Projekt zu einem Halt kam. Es wurde jedoch bald nach Ende des Krieges wieder aufgenommen und eine große Änderung wurde in die Strecke eingebaut.

Um die Pennines zu durchqueren, wurde die Woodhead Line mit unzähligen Tunneln gebaut, die ca. 5 Kilometer lang sein konnten und sich durch die Landschaft zogen. Am Anfang wurde ein eingleisiger Tunnel, der „Woodhead 1“, 1845 eröffnet und war zu der Zeit einer der längsten Tunnel der Welt. Bald darauf eröffnete „Woodhead 2“, der ein weiterer eingleisiger Pfad durch die Pennines war. Da die Tunnel durch die vielen Jahre des Dampflokomotiven-Betriebs beschädigt wurden, wurde entschieden die elektrifizierte Strecke durch den neuen und zweigleisigen Tunnel „Woodhead 3“ verlaufen zu lassen.

Eine kleine Flotte von acht BR Class 506 EMUs wurde für Personenzüge gebaut. Diese drei-teiligen Züge würden nun zwischen Hadfield, Glossop und Manchester in ihrem gesamten Arbeitsleben fahren. Die Class 506 war recht einzigartig, da sie zusammen mit der Class 76 und der Woodhead Line selbst mit einer Spannung von 1.500 V Gleichstrom, anstelle der herkömmlichen 25 kV Wechselstrom, ausgestattet waren. Durch die unterschiedliche Elektrifizierung war es für schwerere Züge leichter ihre Nutzbremsen auf den erbarmungslosen Abfahrten einzusetzen.

Obwohl die Strecke durch die Modernisierung und die neue Flotte aufgerüstet wurde, wurde die Woodhead für den Passagierbetrieb im Jahr 1970 geschlossen. Dies kam wegen der Hope Valley Line zustande, die größtenteils viel bequemer war, jedoch weniger direkt. Die Woodhead Electric Railway in Blau stellt die Strecke in ihren aufregenden Zeiten dar und bietet zusätzliche Strecken, wie die Glossop-Abzweigung und das Reddish-Depot. Une électrification de la ligne avait déjà commencé à être envisagée à l'époque de la GCR, du fait que l'itinéraire soit parsemé de pentes si raides qu'il était très difficile pour les lourds trains de charbon à vapeur de les franchir.

Des travaux ont été entrepris par la LNER en 1936. L'électrification de la ligne était prévue pour aller de Sheffield à Manchester, en incluant la branche qui va vers Wath. Elle avait d'ailleurs une grande partie des portiques en place avant le début de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Le conflit a stoppé le projet, mais il a redémarré une fois la guerre terminée. Afin de passer à travers les Pennines, la ligne de Woodhead comprendrait des tunnels de près de 5 km (3 miles) qui traverseraient les reliefs.
