Soak in the sights, sounds and smells of a venerable route with almost 200 years of history, but which still runs both passenger and freight services across the Kentish countryside. With a range of locos and multiple units tearing down the tracks between lovingly rendered, true-to-life stations this is the route for all fans of English rail!

The South Eastern Railway was established in 1836 to build a railway line which would link London and the coastal town of Dover, a key port with connections to mainland Europe. The line was sedate, but bustling. Passenger, fruit and hops traffic became a staple of the line between Maidstone and Paddock Wood, and despite opposition from residents, and even the Mayor of the county town, there was little denying that the railway was proving beneficial. So beneficial in fact, that it was decided to extend the line further north, continuing to follow the path of the stunning Medway Valley.

One striking feature of the route is that the Medway Valley Line retained its semaphore signalling. It would not be until 2005 that the line was finally brought up to modern standard with colour-light signalling, however some still remain open and can be seen in-game, especially at stations like Cuxton where the level crossing is still hand-operated gates. 

Today, the line is a community rail service operated by Southeastern. The same service pattern is in effect, and is typically formed of 3-car Class 375/3 Electrostars, although Class 466s are used on occasion, and Class 465s have also been used in years prior. An extra service pattern was trialled in 2011 and is now permanent, Southeastern Highspeed Class 395s operate in the morning and evening peaks to Maidstone West, calling only at Snodland before heading to/from London St Pancras.

When brought into Train Simulator, the Medway Valley Line will complement the Chatham Main Line by bringing you a quieter side to Southeastern services while unlocking freight potential across the picturesque countryside. Kent is called “The Garden of England” for a reason – so get out there and see for yourself!

Malgré l'opposition menée par les résidents (et même le maire de la ville), la ligne a été sans aucun doute bénéfique à la localité. Si bénéfique d'ailleurs, qu'il a été décidé d'étendre la ligne plus au nord, pour continuer à longer la sublime Medway Valley.

La caractéristique la plus frappante de cet itinéraire est que la ligne de la Medway Valley a conservé son système de signaux à sémaphores. Il faudra attendre 2005 pour que la ligne soit équipée d'un système plus moderne et standard composé de feux colorés. Cependant, il reste encore quelques sémaphores que vous pourrez voir en jeu, notamment près de gares comme celle de Cuxton, où le passage à niveau est encore opéré manuellement. 

Aujourd'hui, la ligne est un service ferré collectif opéré par la Southeastern. Le même modèle de service est en place et il est typiquement composé de Class 375/3 Electrostars à 3 voitures, bien que les Class 466 soient utilisées à l'occasion et que les Class 465 aient été utilisées dans le passé. Un modèle de service supplémentaire a été établi en 2011 de façon permanente. Les Class 395 Southeastern Highspeed opèrent lors des heures de pointe le matin et le soir à Maidstone West, pour ne s'arrêter qu'à Snodland, avant de se diriger vers ou de s'éloigner de Londres St Pancras.

Die South Eastern Railway wurde 1836 gegründet, um London und die Städte an der Küste von Dover, der ein wichtiger Knotenpunkt zum europäischen Festland ist, zu verbinden. Die Strecke war zwar sehr geschäftig, konnte aber sehr organisiert laufen. Passagiere, Früchte und Hopfen wurde transportiert und wurde zu einer Konstante auf der Strecke zwischen Maidstone und Paddock Wood. Obwohl Gegenstimmen aus der Bevölkerung kamen, sogar vom Bürgermeister der Kreisstadt, sprach wenig dagegen, dass die Umgebung von der Strecke sehr profitierte. Sie war sogar so profitabel, dass beschlossen wurde die Strecke in den Norden zu erweitern, um der Medway Valley Line zu folgen.

Ein bemerkenswertes Detail der Medway Valley Line ist, dass sie bis heute ihre Flügelsignale behalten hat. Es hat bis 2005 gedauert, um die Strecke zu modernisieren und mit farbigen Lichtsignalen auszustatten. Es sind jedoch immernoch Teile der Strecke mit den Flügelsignalen ausgestatten, die auch im Spiel enthalten sind. Halten Sie Ihre Augen offen an dem Bahnhof von Cuxton – dort sind sogar die Bahnübergänge noch handbetrieben. 

Heutzutage wird die Strecke von Southeastern betrieben. Es ist immernoch das gleiche Verbindungsmuster und die Züge bestehen meist aus 3 Wagen mit der Class 375/3 „Electrostar“. Es sind aber auch Class-466-Lokomotiven im Einsatz sowie die Class 465. Es wurde eine zusätzliche Verbindung in 2011 eingeführt und ist nun ein ständiger Teil der Strecke. Der Hochgeschwindigkeitszug Class 395 von Southeastern fährt zu den Stoßzeiten morgens und abends nach Maidstone West und hält nur in Snodland und fährt dann weiter nach London St Pancras bzw. kommt aus dieser Richtung.

Die Medway Valley Line bringt die Chatham Main Line und somit eine ruhigere Ecke der Southeastern zu Train Simulator. Bereiten Sie sich aber auch auf Güterverkehr durch die malerische Landschaft vor. Kent wird nicht umsonst „Der Garten von England“ genannt. Also steigen Sie ein und sehen Sie es selbst!
