Die einfache aber gleichzeitig auch geniale Grundidee von Battle vs. Chess basiert auf der Verschmelzung eines Profi-Schachprogramms mit einer actionbetonten Kampfsimulation inklusive aufwändig animierter Figuren. Zu Beginn scheint alles wie bei einer herkömmlichen Schachsimulation: Ein 3D-Schachbrett mit den zwei gegnerischen Figurensets lädt zur Eröffnung ein und gemäß den offiziellen Schachregeln gilt es, auf die Züge des Gegners zu reagieren. Bereits hier setzt Battle vs. Chess jedoch neue Maßstäbe. Das Brett selbst ist in sechs verschiedene Fantasy-Settings eingebettet, die Figuren sind zudem extrem detailliert und ideenreich in Szene gesetzt. So agieren die Türme beispielsweise in Form mächtiger Felsgolems und das Pferd entpuppt sich als teuflische Chimäre, der der Rauch aus den Nüstern kräuselt.
